BASEMENT ENTRANCE RESTORATION AT 21 ECCLESTONE SQUARE
PIMLICO LONDON

Preserving a Piece of Pimlico History

There is a unique responsibility that comes with working on a square where Winston Churchill once lived. Our recent restoration of a basement flat entrance in Ecclestone Square was as much about heritage as it was about renovation.

The Briefing
Situated in Eccleston Square, within the Pimlico Conservation Area in Westminster, this Grade II listed basement flat entrance required careful restoration. Over time, original detailing had deteriorated, diminishing the architectural presence of the façade and the quality of arrival to the residence.

Given the listed status and the square’s historic significance, the intervention required a rigorous Planning and Listed Building Consent process under close review from Westminster’s conservation officers.

The Solution
We developed a sensitive refurbishment strategy focused on restoring mid-19th-century character through appropriate masonry repair, ironwork detailing, and carefully specified finishes. Every element was reviewed and coordinated to ensure compliance with conservation guidelines while improving durability and visual coherence.

The works were executed with precision, maintaining the architectural integrity of the terrace and respecting the historic streetscape.

The Value Created
The renewed entrance enhances the architectural presence of the property and provides a refined, welcoming threshold consistent with its heritage setting. The improvement in material quality and detailing strengthened both the aesthetic appeal and the long-term asset value of the flat, demonstrating how even modest interventions can have meaningful impact within listed contexts.
